What to Eat on a GLP-1 — and What a CGM Shows About It

“The person with diabetes needs character building just as much as body building.”

Quick answer

When a GLP-1 shrinks your appetite, quality matters more than quantity. Prioritize protein and fiber, don't skip meals entirely, and use a CGM to see which specific foods still spike you — since the answer is personal and often surprising.

When you're only eating a fraction of what you used to, every bite has to work harder for you. The goal on a GLP-1 isn't to eat as little as possible. It's to get enough of the right things while your appetite is quiet, and a CGM is how you find out what "right" means for your body.

Protein first, every meal

The biggest priority is protein. Rapid weight loss can take muscle along with fat, and eating enough protein helps protect it. Because your appetite is small, front-load the protein before you fill up: eggs, fish, poultry, tofu, Greek yogurt, beans. Aim to make protein the anchor of each meal rather than an afterthought, since you may not have room for much else.

Fiber and whole foods to steady the curve

Fiber slows digestion further and softens the glucose rise from a meal. Vegetables, legumes, and whole grains tend to produce gentler curves than refined carbs. This is also where a CGM earns its keep, because the effect of a given food on your glucose is genuinely individual. Two people can eat the same oats and see different curves. Watching your own responses beats following a generic list.

Don't skip meals just because you're not hungry

It's tempting to eat almost nothing on the days your appetite vanishes. That backfires: too little food leaves you shaky, under-fueled, and short on protein. Even a small, protein-focused meal is better than skipping. Think smaller and more deliberate, not absent.

What about eating before bed?

A common question is whether to eat before bed. There's no single rule, but a light, protein-forward snack is usually a safer choice than a big carb-heavy one if you're hungry at night, especially if you tend to wake up feeling low. If you wear a CGM, your overnight line will tell you whether a bedtime snack helps or just adds a spike.

Hydration counts too

Thirst can fade along with hunger on a GLP-1, so dehydration sneaks up on people and can itself cause shakiness and headaches. Drink water on purpose, not just when you feel thirsty.

Let your own curves guide your plate

Generic food lists only get you so far, because your glucose response is yours alone. Endobits reads your CGM and shows you which of your actual meals spike you and which don't, so you can build a plate around what your body proves works. Start with Endobits →
