Post-Meal Walks: The Cheapest Way to Flatten Your Glucose Curve

Why walking after eating works
When you eat, glucose floods into your blood. When you walk, your muscles need fuel and pull glucose out of the bloodstream to burn it, without needing much insulin to do so. Do that during the window when your glucose would otherwise be spiking, right after a meal, and you blunt the peak. It's a direct, mechanical effect: moving muscles are a drain for the glucose your meal just delivered.
The evidence, briefly
This isn't folk wisdom. In a controlled study of older adults at risk for impaired glucose tolerance, three 15-minute walks taken shortly after meals significantly improved 24-hour glucose control, and post-meal walking in particular was effective at lowering the after-dinner rise (DiPietro 2013). Multiple studies since have echoed that even short, easy post-meal walks reduce the glucose spike compared with sitting.
How long, and when
You don't need a workout. Ten to fifteen minutes of easy walking is enough to make a visible difference, and the timing matters more than the intensity. The sweet spot is starting within roughly half an hour of finishing your meal, while glucose is on its way up. A gentle stroll counts. This is one of the rare health interventions where a little, done at the right time, genuinely works.
What it looks like on a CGM with a GLP-1
If you wear a sensor, a post-meal walk is one of the most satisfying things to watch, because you can often see the curve bend downward during and after the walk. Paired with a GLP-1, which is already flattening your peaks, a short walk stacks a second, behavioral lever on top of the drug's effect. Try eating the same meal on two days, one sitting after and one walking after, and compare the curves. The difference tends to be obvious.
Make it a habit that sticks
The reason post-meal walks work in practice is that they're easy to attach to something you already do: a lap after lunch, a walk after dinner. You don't need to change your clothes or find an hour.
