New CGM wearers are often puzzled by the same thing: their glucose is highest first thing in the morning, before they've eaten anything. It feels backwards. The explanation is a well-known bit of physiology called the dawn phenomenon, and understanding it saves a lot of needless worry.

What the dawn phenomenon is

In the early morning hours, your body releases a surge of hormones like cortisol and growth hormone to help you wake up. These hormones tell your liver to release stored glucose into the blood, which nudges your blood sugar up before you're even conscious. It's a normal, universal process that happens in people with and without diabetes. In some people the rise is small; in others it's noticeable on a sensor.

Why your fasting number can beat your after-dinner number

This is the counterintuitive part a CGM makes visible. You might see a flat, low line after dinner and then a climb in the pre-dawn hours, so your "fasting" glucose ends up higher than a reading taken after a meal. That doesn't mean you did something wrong overnight. It's the dawn hormones doing their scheduled job. Seeing it on the graph for the first time surprises almost everyone.

How a GLP-1 fits in

A GLP-1 mainly works on post-meal glucose, so it doesn't directly switch off the dawn phenomenon. Some people find their overall glucose, including mornings, drifts lower as the drug and weight loss improve their metabolism over time, but the morning rise itself is hormone-driven and can persist. If your after-meal curves are flattening while your mornings stay a touch high, that's a normal combination, not a contradiction.

When a high morning number is worth attention

A modest morning rise is expected. What's worth raising with your clinician is a fasting glucose that's consistently high, climbing over time, or paired with high readings throughout the day. Context matters too: a single high morning reading means little, while a persistent pattern is a real data point. If you have diabetes and your mornings are consistently elevated, that's a conversation about your overall regimen, not just the dawn effect.

Don't chase the morning number alone

The temptation is to fixate on that fasting figure because it's the first thing you see. Resist it. Your full picture, time in range, your after-meal curves, and your overall trend, tells you far more than one pre-breakfast number pulled up by normal hormones.
