CGM + GLP-1 Together Beat Either Alone — the CONNECT Evidence

A GLP-1 changes your glucose. A CGM shows you the change. The obvious question is whether using both together does more than either one alone, and a recent trial suggests it does. Here's the signal, with the caveat it deserves.

The idea: the drug acts, the sensor guides

A GLP-1 does the pharmacological work of flattening spikes and lowering glucose. A sensor turns that work into a feedback loop. You see which meals still spike you, whether a dose change is landing, when your overnight glucose settles. In Joslin's framing, the CGM is the always-on nurse that turns a prescription into daily, informed self-management. CONNECT set out to test whether that feedback actually improves outcomes on top of the drug.

What CONNECT reported

CONNECT, a randomized trial reported at a major diabetes meeting in 2026, found that adding continuous glucose monitoring to GLP-1 therapy produced a substantially larger A1C improvement than the drug alone, on the order of 1.4% versus 0.2%. One important caveat: these results are conference-reported and not yet peer-reviewed ([CONNECT, ADA 2026, trade-reported]), so read them as an early, promising signal rather than settled fact. If the peer-reviewed publication holds the numbers up, it's a strong argument for the pairing.

Why the additive effect makes sense

Two mechanisms line up. First, seeing your own data drives behavior. People who watch post-meal glucose tend to adjust meals and timing in response, which the drug alone can't prompt. Second, a CGM catches what an A1C misses. A drug can be flattening your variability while your average barely moves, and only a sensor makes that visible (Battelino 2019). The sensor doesn't replace the drug's biology. It adds a layer of guided behavior on top of it.

Is a CGM worth it if you're already on a GLP-1?

If your goal is simply to lower A1C and trust the process, a GLP-1 works without a sensor. But if you want to know what's actually happening, which foods still spike you, whether your titration is working, whether you ever dip low, a CGM is the instrument that answers those questions. The CONNECT signal suggests it may improve results too, not just satisfy curiosity. With over-the-counter sensors like Stelo and Lingo now available without a prescription, the barrier to trying one is lower than it's ever been.

How to read the caveat honestly

One trial, reported at a conference, is a beginning rather than a conclusion. The direction is encouraging and the mechanism is coherent, but wait for peer review before treating "1.4% vs 0.2%" as a fixed number. What's already solid, independent of CONNECT, is that a CGM shows you things A1C can't, and that alone is a reasonable case for wearing one on a GLP-1.

So the early trial data suggests a CGM adds real benefit on top of GLP-1 therapy, not just insight. Read the specific figures as preliminary until peer review, but the underlying logic holds, and the tools to try it are now over the counter.
